MEET YOUR COMMODORE AND FLAG OFFICER CANDIDATES

The Flag Officers are the heart of our club's leadership. They provide the vision and the operational oversight required to keep our club running smoothly.

CANDIDATE FOR COMMODORE: THOMAS EVANS

I have had the privilege of serving on the Stillwater Boating Club Committee as a Committee Member, Vice Commodore, and most recently Commodore. Working with other members and committee members, I have helped keep the club welcoming, financially stable, and focused on our community as we continue to grow and change.

Like many members, I am also a boat owner who enjoys the facilities, events, and community our club offers. Being both a committee member and an active user of the club gives me a practical understanding of what matters most to our members and their families. I have been involved in much more than just committee meetings, including club events, fishing competitions, working bees, social gatherings, sponsorship efforts, member communications, and the day-to-day work of running our club.

As Commodore, I have focused on clear communication, improved leadership, supporting our volunteers, and increasing member involvement. During my time in this role, the club has seen major changes, including updates to the constitution, improvements to our facilities, ensuring the club is compliant and making sure we meet the needs of all members.

I am committed to preserving the values that make Stillwater Boating Club special while ensuring we keep up with the times and prepare for the future. This means helping improve how the club runs, promoting our activities, building relationships with sponsors and supporters, and encouraging more members to get involved.

What I value most about club life is our sense of community. Over the years, I have been lucky to work with many dedicated volunteers and committee members who have given their time to make the club better. Together, we have celebrated great events and achievements, and we have supported each other through tough times, including the loss of members who helped shape our club.

I am running for re-election because I believe there is still more to do. I care deeply about the future of Stillwater Boating Club and want to help build a strong, welcoming, and financially secure club that serves both current and future members.

CANDIDATE FOR COMMODORE: Ian Dorward

My name is Ian Dorward.

I am 59 years old.

I have lived in Stillwater for 22 years and have a great interest in our community.

I am applying for the position of Commodore.

My background includes

5 years professional sailing within the super yacht industry.

3 years running Bar, Catering, touch rugby, venue management and Maintenance at the Silverdale rugby club.

4 years co-ordinating pest control locally.

Self employed since I was 23 running a small construction company, specialising in top end finishing and property makeovers.

I have also travelled and lived - worked abroad for over 12 years.

If elected as commodore I will promote that all decisions made by the committee follow these key point,

that decisions are in the members best interests,
Financial decisions are viable and profitable to the Stillwater Boating Club,
That we connect with the greater community on a positive level.
I will value and show respect towards all members,
Transpearency and history are paramount.

CANDIDATE FOR Vice COMMODORE: Stephanie Clayden

Hello, I'm excited to put my name forward for the position of Vice Commodore for a second year. I feel I learned a lot during my first year as Vice Commodore and would love the opportunity to use that knowledge to continue to help the club grow.

I have lived in Stillwater for the past 19 years with my partner and daughter. Stillwater is our home, and the boating club has been a big part of that for many years.

I have enjoyed being a part of the boating club committee for the past five years where I have had the privilege of organising and running our fishing events as part of the fishing subcommittee. I have loved leading, running and being a participant in many competitions over the years. My favourite achievement to date has been co-creating, along with my dedicated fishing subcommittee member Bones, the warmly received and ever popular Stillwater Boating Club River Ripper competition.

I’m running for Vice Commodore because I’m passionate about the continuing growth and success of our boating club and would love the opportunity to continue to assist with helping the club thrive. I believe in creating a welcoming, inclusive space where everyone feels like they belong - whether they’re long-time locals or new to the community. I have made a lot of wonderful friends at the club over the years.

I want to help lead the committee into a strong, sustainable future - ensuring the club not only thrives today but is a vibrant, viable place for the wider community to enjoy for many years to come.

CANDIDATE FOR VICE COMMODORE: Russel Jones

I am a business owner and a boat owner with a genuine concern for the
future of our club. I used to regularly attend club evenings and events
having been a member for over 10 years and was actively involved in the
Constitution working group two years ago. I have been concerned about
the club finances, especially the profit and loss statements at each AGM
for many years. Therefore my nomination is for the position of Vice
Commodore so that I will be involved with the Financial subcommittee as
per the constitution. I believe that we can get the club functioning
profitably providing events for our members and yard facilities without
the large increases in prices that we have experienced as members in
recent years.

CANDIDATE FOR Treasurer: GORDON WELCH

I have had the privilege of serving as Treasurer for the past two years.

During that time, I have worked to help keep the Club on a sound financial footing while supporting investment in our facilities and the continued improvement of services for members. My focus has always been on making responsible financial decisions that protect the Club today while planning for its future.

According to my fishing mates, I'm still a pretty average fisherman! I have a launch moored on the river that I don't get to use nearly as much as I'd like, but having well-maintained Club facilities close by is something I value greatly.

We are incredibly fortunate to enjoy the facilities and resources that generations of members have worked so hard to build and maintain. I believe it is our responsibility to continue that stewardship, so the Club remains strong for future generations.

If re-elected, I look forward to continuing to work with the Committee, management team and members to ensure Stillwater Boating Club remains financially sustainable, well maintained and a Club we can all be proud of.

CANDIDATE FOR TREASURER: Mark Lyes

I am now retired from the Navy as a marine engineer after 42 years’ of service and have a boat on a mooring in the river. I have been involved with the club for around 20 years mostly helping with maintaining and building things like the new pontoons, jetty and making and donating the dolly that the yard is using at present for haul out and more. I have always been interested in the finances of the club and known for asking questions about the finances at the AGM’s. But over the last year I have had concerns about the financial viability of the club, so I have put my name in for Treasurer on the committee to have more input and give the members more transparency on what is happening within the club. The club members cannot sustain rising prices in this environment.

CANDIDATE FOR SECRETARY: Fiona Haylock

I have had the privilege of serving as Secretary of the club for the past three years and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of such a dedicated and passionate team. I have lived in Stillwater with my partner and our fur babies for the past seven years and have developed a strong appreciation for the wonderful community we are fortunate to be part of.

In my role as Secretary, I have enjoyed supporting our members through managing memberships and communications, helping to keep everyone connected and informed. I have also had the pleasure of supporting the fishing committee with their competitions, as well as assisting the events team with the many activities held throughout the year. These opportunities have allowed me to stay actively involved with the club, build relationships with our members, and contribute to the welcoming atmosphere that makes our club special.

I am incredibly passionate about our club and the strong sense of community we have created. I would love to continue being part of our shared vision, welcoming both new and existing members, strengthening the connections within our club, and helping to build on the positive progress we have already achieved.

I would welcome the opportunity to continue serving as Secretary, bringing my experience, enthusiasm, and commitment as we work together to support our members and create a positive future for our club.

CANDIDATE FOR SECRETARY: Michelle Charles

Having served eight years on the committee previously I am putting myself forward again after a two year break with the hope that my knowledge and experience of our club, combined with a good understanding of the members needs, can be of help and put to good use.

I find it very rewarding to be of service and support to our club and be part of a team that aims to create a thriving, happy and sustainable place in this unique community.

Beyond the Flag Officers, the Committee consists of eight dedicated members who handle everything from event planning to jetty maintenance. This year, we have twelve candidates vying for these eight positions, reflecting the high level of engagement within our community.

Steve Sharp

I am passionate about our club and have proudly served as a committee member for the past seven years. During this time, I have held the roles of Vice Commodore and Commodore for a combined four years, giving me valuable leadership experience and a strong understanding of the club's operations and future direction. This past year, I have served as Club Captain, continuing my commitment to supporting our members and supporting the day-to-day running of the club.

Over the past year, I have been actively involved in organising working bees, coordinating volunteers, and helping to maintain and improve our facilities for the benefit of all members. My wife and I have also dedicated our time to renovating parts of the club, including the ladies' bathroom and areas of the clubhouse, to create a more welcoming and enjoyable environment. In addition, I have been an active member, assisting with the planning and presentation of club events.

I am committed to the continued growth and success of our club and take great pride in contributing to our boating community. I believe in leading by example and am always willing to roll up my sleeves and get involved wherever needed. It would be an honour to continue serving on the committee, working alongside fellow members to build on our achievements and help ensure our club remains a vibrant, inclusive, and enjoyable place for everyone.

Warren Hedley

I have been a proud Stillwater local for over 20 years and have served on the club committee for the past five years. During that time, I have seen firsthand how our club is truly the heart of our community, bringing people together and creating lasting connections.

I am passionate about ensuring our club remains a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable place for members, families, and visitors alike. I believe our club has enormous potential to continue growing and become an even stronger cornerstone of the Stillwater community.

As a committee member, I have been actively involved in supporting the club's development and improvement. In my role as Health and Safety Officer, I have worked to promote a safe environment for everyone who enjoys our facilities and events. I am committed to continuing this work and helping ensure our club remains a place that our community can be proud of for years to come.

I'm Amber, and I'd love the opportunity to join the Stillwater Boating Club Committee.

As a Stillwater homeowner, a wife, and a proud mum to two amazing girls, this community means a lot to me. I've worked at and been a member of the club on and off for years, know many of our members and locals, and have a genuine passion for our club and the Stillwater community.

With over 25 years' experience in hospitality, customer service, and serving on club committees, I love bringing people together, creating memorable events, and helping build the welcoming club spirit that makes Stillwater so special.

I'm not afraid to roll up my sleeves and get stuck in, and I'd love the opportunity to help our club continue to grow as a fun, friendly place for everyone to enjoy.

Claire Walker

My family and I have proudly called Stillwater home since 2012, when we moved here from the UK. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed into the community, and the Stillwater Boating Club played a huge part in helping us settle.

With three young children and not knowing many people, I first became involved through the weekly playgroup held at the club. That connection soon grew into becoming members, and making lifelong friendships. Over the years, my family and I have enjoyed helping with and participating in many club events, including the Raft Race, Kids' Christmas Party, Waterwise, fishing competitions, and working bees.

The boat club is much more than a place to keep and launch your boat. It's at the heart of our community and holds countless happy memories for my family. As Stillwater continues to grow and evolve, change is inevitable. Rather than resisting it, I believe we should embrace it while protecting the welcoming, community-focused spirit that makes our club so special.

I'm putting myself forward for the committee because I want to help ensure the club continues to be the hub of our community, a place where both long-time and new residents feel welcome, connected, and proud to belong.

Outside of the boating club, I also serve on the committee of the newly formed Stillwater Resilience Group, which was established to help educate, prepare, and connect our community in the event of an emergency.

It would be a privilege to contribute my time and commitment to the future of the Stillwater Boating Club, and I would be grateful for your support.

Keith Maslen

I am seeking election to the Stillwater Boating Club Committee because I care deeply about the future of our club and the important role it plays in our community.

Having previously served on the committee, I understand both the opportunities and challenges that come with helping to run a successful club. During my time on the committee, I was actively involved in the Events Team and worked extensively on fundraising and sponsorship initiatives. Through building strong relationships with local businesses and sponsors, I helped secure more than $14,000 in sponsorship and funding for the club, supporting projects, events, and improvements that benefited all members.

I have always been passionate about bringing people together, creating opportunities for members to enjoy the club, and ensuring we have the financial support needed to continue growing and improving. I remain well connected within the community and believe those relationships can continue to deliver value for the club.

I would welcome the opportunity to contribute my experience, energy, and commitment to the new committee. My goal is simple: to help ensure the continued success of Stillwater Boating Club, support its members, and help build a strong and sustainable future for the club and the wider community.

Hello, my name is Lisa Tucker, and I have proudly called Stillwater home for the past 13 years.

During that time, I have enjoyed being an active member of our village community, volunteering and helping to organise a variety of local events, including Raft Race Day, the club Halloween party, and other community activities. A few years ago, I also organised and ran the Stillwater Dog Show at the community hall, which gave me valuable experience in planning, coordinating, and delivering a successful local event.

I would like to join the Boat Club Committee because I care about the future of the club and want to contribute to its continued success. I believe the club plays an important role in our community, and I would enjoy working alongside the committee to support its members, help organise enjoyable events and activities for all ages, and encourage greater community involvement.

I am enthusiastic, approachable, and happy to lend a hand wherever needed. I would appreciate the opportunity to contribute my time and experience to help ensure the Boat Club continues to thrive for years to come.

I have built my career in marketing, with experience across communications, event management, digital marketing, branding, and campaign development. I am passionate about building strong connections, creating engaging campaigns, and finding creative ways to encourage participation and bring communities together.

My husband & I have proudly called Stillwater home for the past four and a half years and have embraced everything the club has to offer. We value the club's unique role in bringing people together through sport, recreation, and community events.

I am passionate about giving back to the community that has welcomed my family. I would love the opportunity to contribute my professional skills and fresh perspective as a committee member, helping to promote the club, encourage greater member engagement, and support its continued growth. I am committed to strengthening communication, making the most of the club's fantastic facilities, and helping build on the welcoming community spirit that makes the club so special.

Debbie Moss

I have put myself forward for the committee because I am excited about the direction the club is taking and would love to be part of its future. I am particularly interested in supporting the events team, where I believe my experience would be valuable. Through my involvement in the Stillwater Residents Association, I have helped organise a range of successful community events, including the Raft Race, Curry & Quiz Nights, and Christmas in the Park.

I believe I have the skills, enthusiasm, and experience to make a positive contribution to the committee and help support the club's continued growth and success as it moves forward with its vision.

My professional background includes extensive experience in the food industry, providing me with valuable knowledge of food safety, compliance, and regulatory requirements. I have previously used this experience to assist the club, helping it achieve and maintain it’s A Food Grade. I believe this expertise would continue to be an asset to the committee and the club.

Sarah Lyes

I have been a boat club member for more than 15 years. I have always been interested in being on Committees as a Committee Member and have been Secretary on my girls Kindergarten and Primary Schools P.T.A. I am interested in going the extra mile. I am interested in keeping and making sure that the Boat Club is viable. I am married with 3 adult girls and 4 delightful grandchildren. Whom I adore greatly. My hobbies are reading, crosswords, baking and crocheting.

Time to get ready for the 2026 Stillwater Open!

This is a measure comp to be held on Saturday, the 18th of April . Will now be held on the postponed dates.

If the competition is postponed, we will run it as a weekend-long competition over Anzac Weekend, giving three days of fishing to get your haul.

Fishing starts at 5am, and you need to be in the photo line at the club by 4.30pm.

The postponement competition will run from 5pm on Friday, the 24th April, and we will hold an earlier prize-giving on Monday, the 27th April. You will need to be in line by 2pm.

Measure your fish and bring photos for confirmation at weigh-in. The weighmasters will scrutinise your photos; there's no need to send them in. Two photos per species, per angler. The longest will go toward individual prizes. Both entries will help build average sizes and will be eligible.

The item to be in your photo will be emailed by the start time.

Prizes for Early bird, 1-5th place and average snapper, Kahawai, Kingfish, John Dory, Trevally, Gurnard and of course a hard luck story

Women's Fishing Competition

Ahoy Ladies!

Time to get the girls together for the famous STILLWATER WOMEN’S FISHING COMPETITION!

The girls are to get the fish while the blokes stand back. Autumn fishing is a great time to get into a good session. The competition will be strong!

Date – 14 March

Rain day – 28 March

Earlybird – 8 March – The iconic pink Icey Tec Chilli Bin up for grabs

Average snapper – a six pack of Waiheke wines

Fishing starts at 5 AM Saturday, and you must be in line to present your photos by 5 pm.

This is a measure competition; photos should be brought into scrutineers at the club for entry.

Entries $55, including a souvenir T-shirt. And don’t forget your fancy dress for the prize giving! Dress up to the nines, or come as a theme!

Categories are Snapper, Kahawai, Trevally, John Dory, Kingfish and Gurnard. Average snapper categories and heaps of spot prizes.

River Ripper

Ahoy River rippers!

Entries are set to go for the return of the Parsun Outboards “River Ripper” fishing competition.

This is a measure competition to be held inside the channel markers of the river over the weekend of 27th Feb to 1st March.

The idea is to have fun fishing in the river, and, as a measure of competition, the fish you catch can be returned to the creek to live on. The categories are Snapper, Flounder, Trevally, Gurnard, Kingfish, and longest other. There will be an open category and a junior category for under-15s. Tides are late in the day, giving 4 good high tide sessions over the comp.

Entry is $30.00 for an adult, and $20.00 for a junior (under 15 at the time of competition commencement)

An awesome souvenir T-shirt will be available for an extra $25.00. (Limited stocks) 1st Snapper prize is a 5.8HP Parsun Outboard , donated by Roger Twedell at Master Marine , much appreciated, Roger. The remaining open prizes will be cash, based on the number of entries.

The longest fish caught by a junior will win a day's fishing with a friend on a Fatcat boat, sponsored again by Roger at Master Marine. (This will be arranged for a mutual time following the comp) Keep an eye out for the Parsun Microtender stalking the river, taking action shots – There will be a spot prize for the best shot, so best you make a bit of a scene (responsibly) when you see the Microtender around!

A number will be sent out at the start of fishing that must be in the photo. Make yourself familiar with the rules on the boat club website or on the board at the club. So please supply an email address at entry and watch the Facebook page.

This competition is gaining popularity, so get your team and entries together – and keep an eye out for food and drink specials at the club!

�� Kids Fishing Comp: Saturday 10 January!

Bring the kids down for a fun morning on the water and some friendly competition. We’ll be fishing off the wharf from 11:30–1:30. Tickets are $15 and include food and a drink, and every kid goes home with a prize!

After the competition wraps up, we're opening the bar at 1 pm for adults and keeping it open for the rest of the afternoon. Keen for a relaxed, sunny social to continue the fun.

Summerlong Measure Up

Ahoy Summertime Anglers!

What could be better than a measure fishing competition that runs all summer long?

It’s time to enter the famous “Summerlong” Measure up fishing competition. A great comp for the whole family, especially kids on holiday!

This competition runs from 5am Boxing Day 26 December through until Sunday 8th February Midday. A prize giving will be held Sunday 8th Feb, around 4.30PM at the club. You must be at the prize giving to receive a prize, juniors excluded.

Cash Prizes – Minimum $500 for 1st Snapper, prizes for top ten fish in open snapper category.

This is a comp where you can fish anywhere in NZ coastal waters, just mind those new HPA’s. So great if you and the family are getting away, you can measure your catch, and send your entry in with the number attached that will be sent out at the start of the comp. All the usual categories, along with Junior and Women’s. The kids can be entertained fishing while the olds relax.

Also the return of the popular “Mixed Bag.” This will be made up of the anglers combined length of the longest fish entered in all categories. So entering a fish from all available will be the key, there is plenty of opportunity to target different species over the long competition.

Ahoy anglers!

The 2025/2026 fishing season starts with the return of the "OCTOBER FEST" measure fishing competition.

This runs from 12am 3rd October to 11.59pm 31st October, with a special "magic round" held over Labour Weekend with a special raft of prizes for this long weekend that will keep the weekend anglers in the mix.

Fish wherever you like, photograph your catch and see you at the prizegiving to claim a raft of cash prizes.

Average snapper over magic round wins entry to all the comps for the year!

This competition is run by the fishing committee or other nominated members of the Stillwater Boating Club. (The committee) This committee shall have final decision-making powers on the eligibility of any angler or catch entered into the competition. Timing, species and prizes available may be amended due to catch numbers, weather or entrants at the committee’s discretion.

Read these rules carefully, and if in doubt, ask a committee member for clarification. Entries that are deemed invalid will not be eligible for any prizes.

The Competition

This is a month-long fishing competition running from 12.00am 03rd October 2025 to 11.59pm 31st October 2025. All entries must be received within this time. There will be a special sub comp “Magic Round” held over the Labour weekend period between Friday, the 24th October 5pm to Monday 27th October 11.59pm. A special number, word or item to be in the photo will be sent out for this magic round category. A briefing will be held at the club Thursday, 2nd October at 6.30pm to run through the competition.

NZ Fishing rules must be observed. Fish must be caught on a rod and reel

Unless otherwise noted, fishing is open in NZ coastal waters

Valid Species

Normal Species will be as below, but not limited to;

Snapper
Kingfish
Kahawai
Trevally
Gurnard
John Dory

Other species may be added at the discretion of the committee and will be notified prior to the competition commencing.

No sharks, rays or eels.

Entering A Fish

One fish per species can be entered for each category in the competition. An angler may send in more than one fish to be entered, but only the longest eligible fish will be entered for any prizes. Additional entered fish will form the data for the average length prizes. (if applicable) Entries must be sent to fishing@swbc.co.nz by the close of the competition. All entries must have the angler’s name, species and length of the entry in the subject line.

Fish must be of SNA1 area legal size to be eligible for entry.

In the event of a tie, the entry that was received the earliest at the nominated email address will take the highest placing.

Anglers must be in attendance at the prizegiving to receive/ be valid to receive their prize. No show – no prize. Prize giving on 2nd November at 4pm.

Photographing The Fish

Providing a clear and valid image of the fish is the angler's responsibility, and failure to enter a valid photo may be grounds for the committee to invalidate or deduct length from the entry.

Photos must be taken on a valid measure mat showing 5mm increments and a 90-degree stopper. Tape measures and stickers are not valid. Providing the measure mat has an L-shaped end and has been provided by a reputable supplier, then other measures may be acceptable. If in doubt, contact a Fishing Committee member. Measures used must be submitted at the prize giving for checking.

The fish must be placed so that the upper or lower jaw is against the stopper in their natural position (i.e., not elongated) and the tail is spread to prove length. Depending on the species and type of tail, the measure will be taken to the shortest point of the V or the longest point of the flat or inverted tail. Gutted, gilled or butchered fish will not be accepted. Measures will be rounded down to the nearest 5mm marking.

At the commencement of the competition, the committee will announce via email and social media a number, word or object that must be in the photo. This number, word or object must be clearly visible in the photo, and if incorrect or not clearly visible, it may be grounds for invalidating the entry. A special number, word or object will be re-sent at the commencement of the magic round; this will be required to be in the photo to be eligible for this special category.

Categories

Prizes will be awarded to categories as listed in the competition announcement. These categories will be divided into, but not limited to;

Open
Women’s
Junior (under 15 at commencement of competition)
Magic Round

If a competitor enters a fish that places in the open category, then that entry will be moved to that category and no longer be valid in the subcategory. For example, if a junior catches a fish that is placed in the open category, the entry will be removed from the junior category and be valid only in the open category.

Entries for the magic round will also be valid for the general categories above.

General

Decisions of the Fishing Committee are final and cannot be protested.

Competition entry must be received by 6pm 2nd October 2025.

The committee reserves the right to amend comp formats and rules and will do their best to announce them via social media, email etc.

It is solely the entrant’s responsibility to be aware of the rules and requirements; the committee will be available to explain or clarify any areas that the angler does not understand.

The competition aims to be fun and inclusive; any behaviour or actions deemed against this aim may be grounds for exclusion from the event.
