Time to get ready for the 2026 Stillwater Open!

This is a measure comp to be held on Saturday, the 18th of April.

If the competition is postponed, we will run it as a weekend-long competition over Anzac Weekend, giving three days of fishing to get your haul.

Fishing starts at 5am, and you need to be in the photo line at the club by 4.30pm.

The postponement competition will run from 5pm on Friday, the 24th April, and we will hold an earlier prize-giving on Monday, the 27th April. You will need to be in line by 2pm.

Measure your fish and bring photos for confirmation at weigh-in. The weighmasters will scrutinise your photos; there's no need to send them in. Two photos per species, per angler. The longest will go toward individual prizes. Both entries will help build average sizes and will be eligible.

The item to be in your photo will be emailed by the start time.

Prizes for Early bird, 1-5th place and average snapper, Kahawai, Kingfish, John Dory, Trevally, Gurnard and of course a hard luck story

90 Litre Icey tec chilly bin for the earlybird, this closes midnight 12 April and is valued at $450!

Women's Fishing Competition

Ahoy Ladies!

Time to get the girls together for the famous STILLWATER WOMEN’S FISHING COMPETITION!

The girls are to get the fish while the blokes stand back. Autumn fishing is a great time to get into a good session. The competition will be strong!

Date – 14 March

Rain day – 28 March

Earlybird – 8 March – The iconic pink Icey Tec Chilli Bin up for grabs

Average snapper – a six pack of Waiheke wines

Fishing starts at 5 AM Saturday, and you must be in line to present your photos by 5 pm.

This is a measure competition; photos should be brought into scrutineers at the club for entry.

Entries $55, including a souvenir T-shirt. And don’t forget your fancy dress for the prize giving! Dress up to the nines, or come as a theme!

Categories are Snapper, Kahawai, Trevally, John Dory, Kingfish and Gurnard. Average snapper categories and heaps of spot prizes.

River Ripper

Ahoy River rippers!

Entries are set to go for the return of the Parsun Outboards “River Ripper” fishing competition.

This is a measure competition to be held inside the channel markers of the river over the weekend of 27th Feb to 1st March.

The idea is to have fun fishing in the river, and, as a measure of competition, the fish you catch can be returned to the creek to live on. The categories are Snapper, Flounder, Trevally, Gurnard, Kingfish, and longest other. There will be an open category and a junior category for under-15s. Tides are late in the day, giving 4 good high tide sessions over the comp.

Entry is $30.00 for an adult, and $20.00 for a junior (under 15 at the time of competition commencement)

An awesome souvenir T-shirt will be available for an extra $25.00. (Limited stocks) 1st Snapper prize is a 5.8HP Parsun Outboard , donated by Roger Twedell at Master Marine , much appreciated, Roger. The remaining open prizes will be cash, based on the number of entries.

The longest fish caught by a junior will win a day's fishing with a friend on a Fatcat boat, sponsored again by Roger at Master Marine. (This will be arranged for a mutual time following the comp) Keep an eye out for the Parsun Microtender stalking the river, taking action shots – There will be a spot prize for the best shot, so best you make a bit of a scene (responsibly) when you see the Microtender around!

A number will be sent out at the start of fishing that must be in the photo. Make yourself familiar with the rules on the boat club website or on the board at the club. So please supply an email address at entry and watch the Facebook page.

This competition is gaining popularity, so get your team and entries together – and keep an eye out for food and drink specials at the club!

�� Kids Fishing Comp: Saturday 10 January!

Bring the kids down for a fun morning on the water and some friendly competition. We’ll be fishing off the wharf from 11:30–1:30. Tickets are $15 and include food and a drink, and every kid goes home with a prize!

After the competition wraps up, we're opening the bar at 1 pm for adults and keeping it open for the rest of the afternoon. Keen for a relaxed, sunny social to continue the fun.

Summerlong Measure Up

Ahoy Summertime Anglers!

What could be better than a measure fishing competition that runs all summer long?

It’s time to enter the famous “Summerlong” Measure up fishing competition. A great comp for the whole family, especially kids on holiday!

This competition runs from 5am Boxing Day 26 December through until Sunday 8th February Midday. A prize giving will be held Sunday 8th Feb, around 4.30PM at the club. You must be at the prize giving to receive a prize, juniors excluded.

Cash Prizes – Minimum $500 for 1st Snapper, prizes for top ten fish in open snapper category.

This is a comp where you can fish anywhere in NZ coastal waters, just mind those new HPA’s. So great if you and the family are getting away, you can measure your catch, and send your entry in with the number attached that will be sent out at the start of the comp. All the usual categories, along with Junior and Women’s. The kids can be entertained fishing while the olds relax.

Also the return of the popular “Mixed Bag.” This will be made up of the anglers combined length of the longest fish entered in all categories. So entering a fish from all available will be the key, there is plenty of opportunity to target different species over the long competition.

Ahoy anglers!

The 2025/2026 fishing season starts with the return of the "OCTOBER FEST" measure fishing competition.

This runs from 12am 3rd October to 11.59pm 31st October, with a special "magic round" held over Labour Weekend with a special raft of prizes for this long weekend that will keep the weekend anglers in the mix.

Fish wherever you like, photograph your catch and see you at the prizegiving to claim a raft of cash prizes.

Competition 2025 - Rules

This competition is run by the fishing committee or other nominated members of the Stillwater Boating Club. (The committee) This committee shall have final decision-making powers on the eligibility of any angler or catch entered into the competition. Timing, species and prizes available may be amended due to catch numbers, weather or entrants at the committee’s discretion.

Read these rules carefully, and if in doubt, ask a committee member for clarification. Entries that are deemed invalid will not be eligible for any prizes.

The Competition

This is a month-long fishing competition running from 12.00am 03rd October 2025 to 11.59pm 31st October 2025. All entries must be received within this time. There will be a special sub comp “Magic Round” held over the Labour weekend period between Friday, the 24th October 5pm to Monday 27th October 11.59pm. A special number, word or item to be in the photo will be sent out for this magic round category. A briefing will be held at the club Thursday, 2nd October at 6.30pm to run through the competition.

Fishing Method

NZ Fishing rules must be observed. Fish must be caught on a rod and reel

Fishing Area

Unless otherwise noted, fishing is open in NZ coastal waters

Valid Species

Normal Species will be as below, but not limited to;

Snapper
Kingfish
Kahawai
Trevally
Gurnard
John Dory

Other species may be added at the discretion of the committee and will be notified prior to the competition commencing.

No sharks, rays or eels.

Entering A Fish

One fish per species can be entered for each category in the competition. An angler may send in more than one fish to be entered, but only the longest eligible fish will be entered for any prizes. Additional entered fish will form the data for the average length prizes. (if applicable) Entries must be sent to fishing@swbc.co.nz by the close of the competition. All entries must have the angler’s name, species and length of the entry in the subject line.

Fish must be of SNA1 area legal size to be eligible for entry.

In the event of a tie, the entry that was received the earliest at the nominated email address will take the highest placing.

Anglers must be in attendance at the prizegiving to receive/ be valid to receive their prize. No show – no prize. Prize giving on 2nd November at 4pm.

Photographing The Fish

Providing a clear and valid image of the fish is the angler's responsibility, and failure to enter a valid photo may be grounds for the committee to invalidate or deduct length from the entry.

Photos must be taken on a valid measure mat showing 5mm increments and a 90-degree stopper. Tape measures and stickers are not valid. A list of valid measure mats and examples of photos can be viewed here https://www.fishingcomp.co.nz/approved-measures/. Providing the measure mat has an L-shaped end and has been provided by a reputable supplier, then other measures may be acceptable. If in doubt, contact a Fishing Committee member. Measures used must be submitted at the prize giving for checking.

The fish must be placed so that the upper or lower jaw is against the stopper in their natural position (i.e., not elongated) and the tail is spread to prove length. Depending on the species and type of tail, the measure will be taken to the shortest point of the V or the longest point of the flat or inverted tail. Gutted, gilled or butchered fish will not be accepted. Measures will be rounded down to the nearest 5mm marking.

At the commencement of the competition, the committee will announce via email and social media a number, word or object that must be in the photo. This number, word or object must be clearly visible in the photo, and if incorrect or not clearly visible, it may be grounds for invalidating the entry. A special number, word or object will be re-sent at the commencement of the magic round; this will be required to be in the photo to be eligible for this special category.

Categories

Prizes will be awarded to categories as listed in the competition announcement. These categories will be divided into, but not limited to;

Open
Women’s
Junior (under 15 at commencement of competition)
Magic Round

If a competitor enters a fish that places in the open category, then that entry will be moved to that category and no longer be valid in the subcategory. For example, if a junior catches a fish that is placed in the open category, the entry will be removed from the junior category and be valid only in the open category.

Entries for the magic round will also be valid for the general categories above.

General

Decisions of the Fishing Committee are final and cannot be protested.

Competition entry must be received by 6pm 2nd October 2025.

The committee reserves the right to amend comp formats and rules and will do their best to announce them via social media, email etc.

It is solely the entrant’s responsibility to be aware of the rules and requirements; the committee will be available to explain or clarify any areas that the angler does not understand.

The competition aims to be fun and inclusive; any behaviour or actions deemed against this aim may be grounds for exclusion from the event.
